Over at A Rage of Angel, a writer's blog, Angel describes what appears to be a repeat offender. Check it out. Not as big as the Cassie Edwards thing, but a dreadful example of how plagiarism is affecting our work.
I have to wonder, though: Does the internet make plagiarism more common, or simply make it easier to find?
It makes it more common precisely because it's easier to do and it's easier to find what you want. That's not to say that the Internet is bad, just that people will abuse any new technology however they see fit.

I think a little of both.
The 'net makes it easier to do, and it also makes it easier to catch.

Stealing words from others is a pitiful thing; being stolen from takes nothing from you...
just my opinion

I think technology has just made it easier to find. People have plagiarized for years and will continue to do so.

I think it's made it easier to find. I'd be willing to bet cookies that there's a ton of plagiarism out there in older books, but before the internet it was much harder to find or prove. The fact that Ms. Edwards had been stealing lines for twenty-some years before getting caught makes me doubt very strongly that she was the only one.
