I began trying to deal with the dirt pile from digging up 8" of half my fenced yard area. So I am making a large flowerbed against the bank that edges my property. I don't own the bank, but my neighbor has given me the go ahead to garden it because he doesn't. So we both win, and I get some weed control and more sunlight after I clear the bank! Anyhow, I have to do half again as much as you see planted here before I can go back to digging up the rest of the fenced yard for paving. I have no idea what can survive Zone 3-4 temps and handle nearly full shade, or, at best, only 2-3 hours of morning sunlight. So we are applying the "throw everything in there and see what survives" gardening. Call it research. But I've got a Hosta, some oregano, some chives, vinca (2 varieties), day lillies, low bush cranberry, catmint, bachelor's button, pussy toes, ajuga, and a couple of other things that are getting placed in the bed.
Wow that looks like a lot of work. I might sit on the deck and watch you. :)

LOL Charles! It is a lot of work. My friends and coworkers think I am nuts to do it by hand but I actually enjoy it. It's also good for my cranky back, so long as I'm careful.
If you guys ever make it up to Maine, you and Lana are welcome to sit on the porch and watch me shovel dirt.

Fantastic! My garden always looks great in spring/early summer and gradually looks worse as I lose control over the summer. Re Catmint- I planted some, but none of my cats have ever been interested :(
I was so looking forward to some silly feline behavior.
I love the doggy watering station, too.

You sound like my kind of gardener, D. Lynn! My husband is methodical, organized and has a green thumb. My idea of gardening is just throwing a bunch of stuff in a hole and crossing my fingers. LOL
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog & leaving a comment. :)

I think I'm more like you describe yourself. I kill more than I grow. I try, though. It's getting expensive, lol.

I know catmint doesn't attract cats, because it isn't catnip...I've had both, and it has always puzzled me why it's catmint when cats don't care for it. I always have a pot of catnip in the house for when the cats are looking bored. *evil grin* They are so funny when they get drunk on the 'nip!
